COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

HERBICIDE, 2, 4-DICHLOROPHENOXYACETIC ACID (SALTS AND ESTERS)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description               for all federal agencies.

1.            SCOPE. This commercial item description covers the systemic herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D).

2.            CLASSIFICATION.             The herbicide shall be of the following types; and classes;

Type II  -              Liquid salt formulation

Type III -              Liquid ester formulation

Class 1   -              Volatile alkyl esters of 2, 4-D

Class 2   -              Low volatile esters of 2, 4-D

3.            SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.

3.1          Liquid salts.         The liquid salts of 2 ,4-D shall have the following characteristics.

3.1.1      Acid equivalent.                               The product shall contain a minimum of two pounds of 2, 4-D equivalent per gallon of formulation at 68^oF (20^oC).

3.1.1.1   Acid equivalent determination. The quantity of 2, 4-D contained in the salt formulation shall be determined by AOAC method for 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid.

3.1.2      Solubility.            The product shall be soluble in hard or soft water and shall exhibit no persistent foam.

3.1.3      Other ingredients.           The product shall make a solution that contains no ingredients which will inhibit the application of the material at the concentrations normally used for weed control. The product shall remain free of solid material when held at a temperature of 25^oF (-3.8^oC) for a period of at least 5 consecutive 24 hour days.
